I am someone who really likes things that are eerie and a bit off-key, and people with no emotion, I realised creep me out; I like it. Think of 'yandere' characters in anime that kill people with a smile on their face as if it's a routine action - that's batshit crazy. I guess this is why serial killers really interest me too.
Anyway, I'm in the middle of Battle Royale right now (the novel) and this whole scene made me really drawn to this character. Of course, this will contain spoilers as it's way beyond the first page, but if you're cool with that, read on, man.
“I tossed a coin. If it came up heads, I’d take on Sakamochi [and fight against the game] and…if the coin came up tails, I decided I’d take part in this game.” -- Kazuo Kiriyama
One thing was absolutely certain - it was a given for Kazuo. Although he might not have particularly realised it, or more appropriately, because he was incapable of coming to such a realisation, this was what it came down to: Kazuo Kiriyama felt nothing; no guilt, no sorrow, and no pity towards the four corpses [...] and ever since the day he was dropped into this world the way he was, he had never once felt a single emotion.
